The impact of new/digital media on TV: blog task

1) What does the 'industry' concept in A Level Media Studies refer to?
The 'industry' concept is a reference to companies which create and distribute media texts, the standard practices followed within media production and also guidelines and legal frameworks. 'industry' is a refernce to the way in which the the world of Media operates.

2) What does David Hesmondhalgh argue with regards to how the creative industries have changed since the 1980s?
Because of the decline in manufacturing industries, governments saw the benefits of having a strong 'cultural' sector, film, television and music in particular. The creation of CD's in the early 1980s made media texts such as music more accessible. The 1980s was the start of the digitisation of media which contributed to how creative industries had started to change and this created a new shift in how media was created and accessed. The world wide web was also created within this time period which lead to increased technological convergence. All forms of media was able to be accessed through computers, allowing tech companies to create collaborations with media companies and in some cases, become media companies.

3) Choose the three most significant points Hesmondhalgh makes regarding the changing cultural industries.
Why are these the most significant in your view?
The first point he made was that Niche audiences are increasingly targeted. In my opinion this is important because it means media companies are recognising that there are different types of audiences who like different things so they can differentiate and create higher quality content in more detail for a specific audience.

4) What is technological convergence?
Technological convergence is the tendency that astechnology changes, different technological system sometimes evolve toward performing similar tasks.

5) How are technology companies challenging traditional broadcasters in the TV industry?
Amazon and Netflix are challenging traditional broadcasters by producing their own original content which has on-demand viewing and audiences have the ability to stream shows too. An example of a successful Netflix original production is Narcos

6) What budgets will Netflix, Amazon and Apple spend on original programming next year?
Netflix: $8 billion
Amazon: $4.5 billion
Apple: $1 billion

7) How many countries are Netflix and Amazon available in?
190

8) The global nature of modern television means producers are having to consider international audiences when creating content. What example from Netflix does the article use to explain this?
The monster in Stranger Things (Demogorgon) was renamed in certain countries as other cultures may translate it differently.

9) Do you think technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon will increase their interest in the television industry?
Because of the rapid growth of TV through the internet, i think they may increase their interest as Facebook, Google and Amazon are some of the biggest internet companies.

10) How do changes in technology influence the creation of TV dramas such as Capital or Deutschland 83? How?
Changes in technology make content more available globally, so in order for these shows to do well they may need to adapt how their cultural approach to keep viewing numbers high in as many places as possible.
