Kidulthood- Narrative and Genre

Within the trailer of Kidulthood, the producers convey the urban coming of age drama through the select scenes cut together in the montage. We see the young teenagers smoking, partying and drinking. You also see scenes where the main characters are causing mischief. An example is when he throws his burger back at the waitress, the girl stealing alcohol from the shop and the other boy throws bottles at the shop keeper. They then show the antagonist seemingly bullying the protagonist, teasing him about his supposed girlfriend. They also convey the coming of age drama within the trailer as they cover obstacles in young life such as pregnancy. The girl is seen standing in the mirror rubbing her stomach and her facial expressions show her reaction to it. The boys reaction is also caught when she tells him over the phone showing the contrasting way both sides react to such news. The jump cuts and swipe transitions also make the trailer seen more fast paced, keeping audiences attention.

Adulthood- Mise-en-scene

The trailer for Adulthood conveys the genre of urban coming of age/ crime drama through the costumes. A lot of the characters are seen in hoodies and tracksuits which instantly connote to common criminals especially within the area of London. The actors facial expressions also make them look hardened and seem more criminal. Danny Dyer who also features within the film is seen as a 'hard man' within the film industry. His roles within films such as 'Football factory' created this persona and when the audience see him within the trailer it makes them think it will be a urban crime film.

Menace II Society- Camera Work
In the trailer, when the car pulls up slowly, seeming as if a drive by is about to happen, a sequence of scenes are edited to pass by quickly to make it seem as if his life is flashing before his eyes. after this sequence, we then see the protagonist in a dark room with a man pointing a gun towards him. the 'flash back' then continues as the fast edited clips reappear. After the male finishes his speech about surviving in America as a black man, the gang within the car begin shooting. the speeches from the characters match with the scenes shown as when the woman says he should be proud he graduated and is still alive at 18. This is when we see him sitting in class at school. When she mentions that he shouldn't end up like 'DJ' we then see him visiting someone who is in a prison cell. We see the characters running and then shooting back which shows the complications that go in his neighbourhood. The rest of the scenes showcase the protagonist involving himself with crime as he gets arrested, and is seen shooting guns.

Boyz N The Hood- Editing

After the boys mother tells him about how she doesnt want to see him end up dead, it cuts to a scene where there are a lot of people gathered then gun shots go off. A text screen then comes up saying 'one out of every twenty one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime' while the shooting carries on in the background. This emphasises the severity of violence within certain neighbourhoods within America. After showing the gun man smiling, it then says 'Most will die at the hands of another black male'. During the background speech, everything he mentions is shown visually. When he says drugs, the protagonist is handed a bottle which he turns away, when he says crime it shows a man holding money and when he says violence you see a gun pointed towards the protagonists neck. The trailer is edited in a way that each piece of dialogue is represented visually instead of only showing the person who is talking.

Paid in Full- Sound

Within the Paid In Full trailer, they use an upbeat song in the background which provides a contrapuntal and parallel sound alongside the different scenes shown in the trailer. An example of it being parallel is when they are in the club. They are dancing so it fits well alongswide the track. Another example is when they are counting alot of money. This is when they are obviously very happy as they are handling a vast amount of money. An example of it being contrapuntal is when there is violence going on. There is a scene where they are in prison fighting and another which involves shooting. Using such an opposite soundtrack along these scenes makes it seem as if it is normal that these things occur in the neighbourhood. The characters dialogue are also dubbed over certain scenes. One of the characters says 'its hard in these streets', then the trailer showcases the ups and downs of being a drug dealer within Harlem.

Training day- Trailer conventions, intertextuality, graphics, text-on-screen etc.

In the trailer for 'Training day', right at the beginning text is used in order to narrate what the film is about. This is a basic outline for the audience to understand what the film is about. This is without showing any of the scenes. As it says 'a dedicated cop', the character is shown which shows who the character is. The character is an intertextual reference to dirty cops who associate with crime but carry the badge. The text also states about how the cop has crossed the line. After this, we see the first character have a sinister look on his face through the car mirror, then pulls the gun out on the training day officer. It also references to social issues of dirty cops. The text says 'where do you draw the line?' after the training cop says 'this isnt justice its street justice'. This outlines problems within society amongst the police force.

Film Pitch
Our coursework brief requires us to create our own film trailer and posters for an original movie that we have created in the horror or coming-of-age drama genres. Plan the following:

Title: No Further Action

Tagline:Choose company wisely

Genre (and sub-genre/hybrid genre if applicable): Coming of age/ urban crime

Logline – one sentence that sums up the film and hooks people in (25 words or fewer): A boy chasing his dreams of becoming a footballer who is held back by the harsh realities of his environment

Other successful films that are similar to yours: Boyz N The Hood, I'll manors, Meance II Society

Narrative structure – what happens in the film and in what order: Protagonist and his best friend chasing the football dream avoiding falling into crime. The best friend is then killed. The protagonist must choose between avenging his friend or carrying on with his career.

Hero/heroine, their desires, the conflicts they encounter etc.: Ignoring negative influence, avoiding the path of crime, racial profiling

Statement of Intent
I am aiming to reinforce stereotypes but put them in a context which is different to the way they are portrayed within mainstream media in order to draw sympathy from the audience. I intend on doing this through the reasoning the characters give for their actions. The conflicts that happen within this scene will cause audiences to think about how they would react in the same situation which allows them to relate to the characters. It will appeal to an audience in the age range of 14-25 as the surroundings and themes within the film will be familiar to them and something they are used to seeing. If it isn't, as they live in the same environment, they will be seeing another persons viewpoint on controversial issues that are in urban London. Within the short dialogues the characters have with each other I will try to create a narrative behind each character which outlines their personalities and different situation in a brief manor. Different decisions will be made which lead to the final outcome. I was inspired to create this coming of age drama by the Kidulthood trilogy films as they relate to issues within lower to working class London. As there arent any females within the any of the scenes, i find that the audience may be mainly male as they will be able to relate to it more. Within these urban coming of age dramas, I noticed that they use mostly natural lighting in order to deviate away from making the film look too glamorised. Especially as this will be a low budget film, I wont have access to using studio lighting in most of my shots. The use of local popular culture such as music, slang and clothing. In my film scene, the focus will be more on the dialogue than the music because of the nature of the scenes. Uses and Gratification theory can be applied as the audience will have personal relations with the characters as they may be able to relate to certain characteristics they have, have had similar experiences or simply like a characters personality. I plan to film on an estate, on a football pitch and inside a house. Most of the scenery will be on an estate as this is where most of the characters will see and interact with one another. The football field will be primarily to focus on the protagonist and his best friend rather than involving more of the cast as they are the only characters who genuinely play football. The trailer would mainly be advertised on YouTube as it is an accessible platform in which a lot of people can view it. Another way of advertising a film such as this would be to find a way to incorporate certain scenes into music videos. This gives exposure as people who listen to cthe artist will see the trailer while listening to their favourite music, giving them more of a focus they would have to turn off the song to stop seeing scenes from the film. They would also question which film it is from giving the perfect opportunity to promote the film. Music stars also have leverage within youth popular culture, so by using them to promote it, the chances of success will be higher. As it is a low budget film, the best place for it to be would probably be on YouTube as it is free so more people can view it, increasing the potential views. Using social media will also boost the films profile as a lot of the target audience will be active on these platforms. Starting a trending hashtag across Instagram and Twitter would spread word quickly and prove an effective way of promotion. UK rap YouTube channels such as GRMdaily and Link Up Tv could distribute the film as the music used in the film will be on their channel. The music they distribute also covers similar experiences the characters in the film have so the themes in both the music and on the screen are similar. These two channels also play a big part within popular culture, especially at the target audience. Having them promote the film would also help allow it to reach a w
