8) Why was Chicken unable to use such a release and distribution strategy when it was made in 2014?

1) The media magazine article covers the different distribution techniques used within the film industry and how it can change in the future. In the article, theres is a comparison between arthouse films and mainstream films, how mainstream dominates and creates a difficult environment for arthouse to succeed on a bigger scale. The top 10 distributors had 95% share of the market in 2012. The top 6 is Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Disney and Paramount. These are also film studios which shows how they can dominate the market. With big budgets, they can afford to distribute theyre films on a larger scale as well as it being easy for them as they own 95% of the market share in terms of distribution. Only 5% is left and low budget films dont have the finances to use the big distributing companies.

2) Industrial Evolution: Producer Andy Starke on the music industry influences informing A Field In England’s release strategy.

Being creative and forward thinking about the entire production and distribution was well received in this directors case due to the development of technology.

Screening/radical release: Commissioning Executive Anna Higgs on the groundbreaking release plans for A Field In England.

Audience: Anna Higgs discusses where A Field In England sits within British cinema and how it will reach its intended audience for the film.

3) It was released on TV, DVD and in cinemas all on the same day

4) The film will have more coverage and more people can access it, increasing the views.

5) It can lose revenue as people will just watch it for free on TV.

6)It would be aimed at a middle class ABC1 audience as it is an arthouse film

7) Main stream films wont take this approach as they need to be able to make as much money as possible in order to make back the high budget they spent creating the film. However, piarcy is a problem in the industry as people have watched it for free through illegal streaming.
8) Chicken had a micro budget of £110,000 so they didnt have enough funding to release it in this way.
